Kingsmead Cricket Ground (Durban)

The Kingsmead Cricket Ground is the home of the Dolphins, the team that represents the KwaZulu-Natal province and compete in the 4-Day Domestic Competition and One Day Cup. The Durban Heat have also started playing their home fixtures in the newly formed Mzansi Super League Twenty20 competition.

The first Test match played at Kingsmead was between South Africa and England in 1923, resulting in a draw. The longest Test match on record was also played in 1939, with England and South Africa playing for 9 days in a ‘Timeless Test’ before the match was declared a draw when England needed to catch their boat home.

Tenants: Dolphins (4-Day Domestic Competition/One Day Cup) & Durban Heat (Mzansi Super League)

Opened: 1923

Capacity: 25,000

Address: Kingsmead Way, Kingsmead, Durban, 4001, South Africa

As well as regularly hosting Test matches, a number of One Day International’s and Twenty20 International’s have been played at the ground. This included 5 matches at the 2003 Cricket World Cup and 9 matches at the 2007 World Twenty20, with India’s Yuvraj Singh recording six consecutive sixes off England’s Stuart Broad in a group match.

Kingsmead has been redeveloped since the 1980’s, although the modern stands sit between the old grandstand and grass banks. The ground is prone to bad light due to its easterly location within South Africa and the tide is said to affect batting conditions, due to Kingsmead’s proximity to the beach and the pitch being slightly below sea level.
