The World Snooker Championship is the premier event on the World Snooker calendar, being the most prestigious and prize money on offer. First held in 1927, the ‘modern’ era of the Championship began in 1969 when the tournament became a knock-out tournament. In the modern era, Stephen Hendry and Ronnie O’Sullivan are the most successful players having won an equal 7 times, followed by Steve Davis, Ray Reardon with 6 titles.


When is the World Snooker Championship?

The World Snooker Championship takes place every year, over a period of 17 days across April and finishing on the first Monday in May (usually a Bank Holiday in the UK).

Since 1977, the World Snooker Championship has been held at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, England and will continue to do so until at least 2027.

How do I get there?

The Crucible Theatre is located in the city centre of Sheffield.

Airport

The closest international airport is Doncaster Sheffield Airport, approximately 18 miles from the city centre. The airport mainly serves holiday destinations across the Mediterranean and cities across Eastern Europe.

The X6 is a direct, regular service from Sheffield Interchange to the Airport, with a journey time of approximately 65 minutes. Alternatively, catch the 57a or 57c bus to Doncaster Interchange, walk a few minutes to Doncaster Station and catch a train Sheffield Train Station.

Alternatively, East Midlands Airport is within an hour’s drive whilst there are direct trains to Manchester Airport every hour.

Coach

The Sheffield Interchange is the main bus station in the city, located within the city centre and being less than a 5 minute walk from the Crucible Theatre via Norfolk Street.

Parking

If driving to Sheffield, the Crucible’s car park partners at Q-Park Charles Street offers one hour free car parking. Alternatively, you could consider Park and Ride using the city’s Tram system with the closest tram stops being at Castle Square and Cathedral (400 metres away). Train

Sheffield Train Station is located less than a 10 minute walk from the Crucible Theatre along Pond Street. The station is the busiest in South Yorkshire and has services going across the country, including to: Birmingham, Bristol, Derby, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool Lime Street, London St Pancras, Manchester Piccadilly, Newcastle, Norwich, Nottingham, Oxford, Reading and Southampton.

How do I get tickets to the World Snooker Championship?

For the 2022 tournament, tickets started at £36 per session rising to £110 for a session at the Final.
