British and Irish Lions

The British and Irish Lions are a touring rugby union side consisting of players from the home nations – England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

The Lions tour every four years, alternating around the Southern Hemisphere nations of Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

The first tour was in 1888 when a team representing the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland toured Australia and New Zealand.

The most recent results have seen the Lions lose 1-2 to South Africa in 2009, defeat Australia 2-1 in 2013 and draw 1-1 with New Zealand in 2017.


Upcoming Tour

The British and Irish Lions are next due to tour in 2021 when they will visit South Africa, touring Australia 4 years later in 2025.

The Lions are due to play a three-match series against South Africa, with five additional warm up matches against local sides:

17 July 2021 – Bulls v British and Irish Lions (Loftus Versfeld, Pretoria)

24 July 2021 – South Africa v British and Irish Lions (FNB Stadium, Johannesburg)

31 July 2021 – South Africa v British and Irish Lions (Cape Town Stadium, Cape Town)

7 August 2021 – South Africa v British and Irish Lions (Ellis Park Stadium, Johannesburg)
