Primeira Liga (Portugal)

The Primeira Liga is the top league of Portuguese football, consisting of 18 teams (currently known as Liga NOS for sponsorship reasons). The team to earn the highest points over the 34 match season is the champion, with the lowest 2 clubs relegated to the Segunda Liga.

The Primeira Liga was first played in 1934 and with the exception of Belenenses in 1945-46 and Boavista in 2000-01, has only ever been won by “os três grandes” – “the big three” of S.L. Benfica, FC Porto and Sporting CP.

The 2019 – 2020 champions were Porto, winning their 29th title after the league was originally suspended from March to June due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The season was finished with the 2 promoted sides being Nacional and Farense, replacing Vitória de Setubal and SC Desportivo das Aves.
