The home of Newcastle United since its opening in 1892, St James’ Park is one of English football’s iconic grounds. Newcastle consistently have one of the highest average attendances in the Premier League, with the local Geordie fans known for their passion and often pack out the 52,000 capacity stadium.

The stadium is the seventh largest football stadium in England and has hosted international football on a number of occasions, including England fixtures, 3 matches at Euro 1996 and 6 matches for the 2012 Olympic Games.

In addition, St James’ Park has hosted important matches in both formats of rugby. This includes Rugby League’s Magic Weekend from 2015 to 2018 and 3 matches at the 2015 Rugby World Cup. This stadium also held the 2019 final of the European Rugby Champions Cup.

Location & Travel to St James’ Park

St James' Park

St James’ Park is located in the centre of Newcastle so has a number of different travel options.

Airport – Newcastle International Airport is approximately 7 miles away from the stadium and has connections with many UK and international destinations.

The airport has its own Metro station, from here you can take the green line to Haymarket station, to which St James’ Park is just a short walk away.

Bus – The two major bus stations are both less than a 5 minute walk from the stadium. Haymarket is the hub for services from Northumberland and the North, whilst Eldon Square is used for services from County Durham and the South.

Coach: Newcastle Coach Station is less than a mile from the stadium and is about a 15 minute walk away. With National Express having links to many destinations, you can search and book your tickets here.

Alternatively, most clubs will offer a coach service if purchasing away tickets.

Metro: The Tyne & Wear metro system operates in the local area, the closest stations to the stadium are at St James’ and Monument station’s. Both stations are just a short walk away.

Park & Ride: The club operates two park & ride services on match days – at Newcastle Great Park and the MetroCentre. Further information is available here.

Train – Newcastle Central Station is just a 10 minute walk from the stadium. The station has services to Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, London and Manchester, as well as a number of regional services.
