The Losail International Circuit opened in 2004 after being constructed in just over a year at a cost of $58 million. The circuit hosted its first MotoGP Qatar motorcycle Grand Prix on the 2nd October 2004, won by Sete Gibernau.
Since 2007, the circuit has hosted the opening round of the MotoGP season and in 2008 hosted the first floodlit Grand Prix of the sport after the addition of permanent outdoor lighting for night races.
Several other motorsport series have been held at the circuit, including the short lived Grand Prix Masters event in 2006 (won by Nigel Mansell), the Superbike World Championship from 2005 to 2009 and 2014 to 2019, a night time GP2 Asia event in 2009 (won by Nico Hülkenberg) and the World Touring Car Championship from 2015 to 2017.
The inaugural Formula One Qatar Grand Prix will be held at Losail in 2021 as a replacement for the cancelled Australian Grand Prix.
