Kardinia Park (Geelong)

Kardinia Park

Kardinia Park Stadium (currently known as GMHBA Stadium for sponsorship reasons) is the home ground of AFL side Geelong Football Club. Australian rules football has been played in the park since the 19th century but it wasn’t 1941 the venue was established as the home of Geelong, after their former home of Corio Oval was commandeered by the military during the Second World War.

The record attendance was reached on the 30th August 1952 when the Geelong Cats took on Carlton Blues in front of 49,109. The stadium has undergone a number of renovations over recent years, the most recent that began in September 2021 and expected to be finished in mid-2023, increasing capacity to over 36,000.

Despite prominently being used as Australian rules football venue, international cricket was first played at the stadium in February 2017 as Sri Lanka defeated Australia in a T20 international by 2 wickets. BBL side, the Melbourne Renegades have played up to 2 matches a season at the ground since 2017 and Kardinia Park is also due to host six first round matches of the 2022 T20 World Cup.

Football (soccer) has also been played at the stadium, with A-League side Melbourne Victory playing several fixtures there. Newly formed side Western United Football Club played the majority of their home matches at Kardinia Park between 2019 and 2022 whilst their proposed stadium at Tarneit was to be constructed.
