Bellerive Oval (Hobart)

Bellerive Oval

The Bellerive Oval (known as Blundstone Arena for sponsorship reasons since 2011) is a cricket and Australian rules football ground. The first recorded football match between Carlton and Bellerive was recording in the area in 1884 but it was in 1914 the ground was formalised.

The ground remained little changed until the 1980s, when the Tasmanian Cricket Association moved their headquarters to Bellerive in 1987 following refurbishment works to the grandstands and playing surface. This move replaced the TCA Ground as Tasmania’s primary cricket ground, with the first One Day International played between Sri Lanka and New Zealand on the 12th January 1988. A year later, Australia hosted their first Test match at the ground against Sri Lanka in December 1989.

Further redevelopments took place in 2003, 2009 and 2015 which has seen capacity raised to about 20,000. Today, the ground hosts the Tasmanian Tigers’ Sheffield Shield and One Day Cup matches, as well as the Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League. Since 2012, North Melbourne Football Club of the AFL have played two or three matches per season at Bellerive.

Bellerive has hosted matches at both the 1992 and 2015 Cricket World Cup’s and is due to host matches for the 2022 T20 World Cup.
