St George’s Park Cricket Ground (Port Elizabeth)

St George’s Park Cricket Ground is the home of the Warriors cricket team that represents the Eastern Cape province in domestic South Africa competitions. As of 2022, the Sunrisers Eastern Cape SA20 franchise team play their home fixtures at the ground.

The cricket ground was established at St George’s Park in 1889, hosting South Africa’s first test match in March 1889 when they lost to England by 8 wickets. This was also the first ever Test match to take place outside of Australia or England.

The ground continues to host Test match cricket and hosted its first One Day International in 1992 as South Africa defeated India by 6 wickets. St George’s Park hosted five matches during the 2003 Cricket World Cup including three group games, one Super Six game and a semi-final. IPL cricket matches were also staged there in 2009.

South Africa’s first ever international rugby union match took place at the ground in 1891, as they lost 4-0 to the touring British Isles team.

Location & Travel to St George’s Park Cricket Ground

St George’s Park Cricket Ground is located in St George’s Park, approximately 1.5 kilometres southeast of the city centre of Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape province.

Airport – The Port Elizabeth Airport is the fourth busiest airport in South Africa but only dealing with domestic flights from Bloemfontein, Cape Town, Durban or Johannesburg. If flying internationally, you will have to transfer at Cape Town, Durban or Johannesburg.

Train – The Port Elizabeth railway station has daily intercity trains to Johannesburg and Bloemfontein, along with the Metrorail Eastern Cape commuter service and is located approximately 2 kilometres to the east of the ground.
