Kiawah Island Golf Resort (Kiawah Island, SC)

Kiawah Island Golf Resort

Kiawah Island Golf Resort opened in 1974 and features five championship golf courses across an area of 10 miles. The most notable of these is the Ocean Course, which opened in 1991 and hosted the Ryder Cup that year and known as the “War on the Shore.” The USA won 14½ – 13½ after Europe’s Bernhard Langer missed a putt on the 18th hole which would have won his match and retain the cup.

The course has also hosted the the World Cup of Golf twice – won by Pádraig Harrington and Paul McGinley of Ireland in 1997 and Rory Sabbatini and Trevor Immelman of South Africa in 2003.

The PGA Championship was played at the course for the first time in 2012, with Rory McIlroy winning by a record 8 strokes. The tournament will return for a second time in 2021.

Other tournaments to be played on the Ocean Course include the PGA Professional Championship in 2005 and the Senior PGA Championship in 2007.
