The Ahmed bin Ali Stadium first opened in 2003 and was the home of Qatar Stars League team Al-Rayyan SC. The original stadium had a capacity of around 12,000 but was effectively demolished in 2015 ahead of the country hosting the 2022Â FIFA World Cup.
The redeveloped stadium was inaugurated on the 18th December 2020 by hosting the 2020 Amir Cup final, which was also Qatar’s National Day and two years before the country hosts the World Cup Final.
The stadium currently has a capacity of 40,740 but this will be reduced to 21,000 after the World Cup with the remaining seats donated to developing countries. Seven matches will be played at the venue, including a Round of 16 match and will also host several matches at the 2020 FIFA Club World Cup.
