BC Place (Vancouver)

BC Place is a multi-purpose stadium that opened in 1983 and has a current capacity of 54,500. The stadium is the home of the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League (CFL) and the Vancouver Whitecaps of Major League Soccer (MLS). In addition, the venue annually hosts the Canada Sevens, a leg of the World Rugby Sevens Series.

When the stadium opened on the 19th June 1983, it was originally an indoor structure with an air-supported roof – the largest in the world at that time. The first event was held on the 20th June, with the Vancouver Whitecaps hosting the Seattle Sounders in a North American Soccer League (NASL) match. On the 23rd June, the BC Lions played their first game in the new stadium as they defeated the Calgary Stampeders 41-19 in a preseason game.

BC Place hosted the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics. Just after the event, a major renovation saw the air-supported roof replaced with the world’s largest cable-supported retractable roof.

The stadium hosted Five group stage matches, two round of 16 matches, a quarter-final and the Final of the 2015 Women’s World Cup, with the United States beating Japan 5-2. The venue is due to host several matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
