Bay Oval (Mount Maunganui, New Zealand)

Originally known as Blake Park, first class cricket and one-day matches were regularly played in the area from 1987 until 2001. When first class cricket was lost from Blake Park, the Bay of Plenty Cricket Association recognised the need for a new ground and the Bay Oval was constructed, hosting its first Northern Districts Twenty20 match in 2007. The Bay Oval has become has one of the regular venues used by the Northern Districts in the Plunket Shield and Ford Trophy, and the Knights in the Super Smash.

International cricket was first played at the Bay Oval in January 2014 with a 2014 ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier between Canada and the Netherlands. The ground has gone on to host a number of other ODI’s and began hosting Twenty20 International’s in 2016. The Bay Oval is due to host its first ever Test Match with New Zealand playing England.

Location & Travel to Bay Oval

Bay Oval is located in Mount Maunganui, a major suburb of the city of Tauranga, the most populous city in the Bay of Plenty region in New Zealand’s North island.

Airport – Tauranga Airport is located just 3 kilometres from Bay Oval and 6km from Tauranga. The airport is a small regional airport with flights to Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. The closest international airport Auckland, about a 90 minute drive to the North of Hamilton.

With the airport being less than 10 minutes away from both Tauranga and Mount Maunganui, taxi is the best choice of getting to the Airport and will be relatively inexpensive.

Bus – The City Link (CL) bus runs from Tauranga CBD to Totara Street (opposite the Bay Oval) in about 15 minutes. The CL bus also goes from Maunganui Road in Mount Maunganui to Hinau Street, near the Bay Oval in less than 5 minutes.
