Welford Road (Leicester)

Welford Road

Welford Road is a rugby union stadium that has been the home of Leicester Tigers since it opened in 1892. The North, East and West stands have all undergone major redevelopments in the last 25 years that has raised capacity to 25,849. This makes Welford Road the largest purpose-built club rugby union ground in England.

The ground officially opened on the 10th September 1892 when Leicester beat a Leicestershire XV 17-0, with the two sides playing again in 1992 to mark the 100 year anniversary as Leicester won 40-20.

A record 35,000 watched Leicester play the touring New Zealand team on the 4th October 1924. Other significant matches at the ground include five England international matches between 1902 and 1923 and a single pool match at both the 1991 and 1999 Rugby World Cup. New Zealand defeating Italy 31-21 in 1991 and Tonga edging out the Italians 28-25 in 1999.
