Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium (Abu Dhabi)

Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium

The Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium opened in May 2004 at a cost of $23 million, hosting its first first-class match when Scotland played Kenya in the Intercontinental Cup in November.

The stadium has gone on to host all formats of international cricket. Pakistan have played in Abu Dhabi a number of times, having hosted the majority of their cricket in the UAE since the 2009 terrorism attack on the Sri Lanka team in Lahore. They have hosted series against Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa and the West Indies at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium.

The first part of the 2014 Indian Premier League was played in the UAE due to the tournament clashing with the Indian General Election. The stadium held seven matches and is hosted a number of matches at the 2020 IPL, with the tournament returning due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The annual T10 League also began to be played at the stadium since 2019 in either November or December. The 10-over-a-side matches last 90 minutes and have featured some of the biggest names in the sport, including Eoin Morgan, Shane Watson, Andre Russell, Lasith Malinga and Darren Sammy.

The 20,000 stadium is part of a wider complex, which also includes two smaller grounds – Nursery 1 (Tolerance Oval) and Nursery 2. The Tolerance Oval held its first Twenty20 International between the United Arab Emirates and Australia in October 2018.
