Cricket was first played at Hagley Oval in 1851, however it wasn’t until the earthquake that ravaged Christchurch in 2011 caused Hagley Oval to become the permanent home of cricket in the city, due to the damage and subsequent demolition of Lancaster Park.

International cricket was first played at the Hagley Oval in 2014 with an ODI between Canada and Scotland, hosting its first Test Match on Boxing Day in 2014 between New Zealand and Sri Lanka and subsequently hosting several matches at the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup.

Location & Travel to Hagley Oval

The Hagley Oval is located in Hagley Park, approximately 2km west of Christchurch’s CBD.

Airport – Christchurch International Airport is located 12km north of the city, being the second busiest in New Zealand after Auckland. The airport has links to domestic cities in the country, as well as further afield to Brisbane, Dubai, Gold Coast, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Melbourne, Nadi, Singapore and Sydney.

The Purple Line (Airport to Sumner via Avonhead) runs from the airport directly to Hagley Oval, if you hop off at the Christchurch Women’s Hospital Outpatients. Alternatively bus route 29 runs from the airport to the city. Tickets cost $8.50 one way or $15 return.
