Grace Road (Leicester)

Grace Road (currently known as Uptonsteel County Ground for sponsorship reasons) is a cricket ground that is the home of Leicestershire County Cricket Club.

The club purchased the land on which the ground sits in 1877 and held their first match there in April 1878, playing the touring Australians in which they lost by 8 wickets. Leicestershire left the ground 1901 as it was deemed too far from the town centre, returning in 1946 and have been there ever since.

Three One Day International matches have been played at Grace Road, the first during the 1983 Cricket World Cup as eventual winners India defeated Zimbabwe by 5 wickets in the group stage. A further two matches were held there during the 1999 Cricket World Cup, with Zimbabwe defeating India by three runs and West Indies winning against Scotland by eight wickets.
