WGC Match Play

The WGC Match Play (currently known as the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play for sponsorship reasons) is one of the four annual World Golf Championship events and the only to use the match play format. The event was first played in 1999 and features the 64 best players in the world by ranking.

The players are divided into 16 groups of four players, playing a round-robin format over Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday with one point awarded for a win and a half point for a tie. The group winner qualifies for the round of 16 played on the Saturday, immediately followed by the quarter-finals. The semi-final, third-place playoff and final are all then played on Sunday, with the winner receiving a Wedgwood trophy named the Walter Hagan Cup.

The current champion is Kevin Kisner of the United States, winning the 2019 tournament by defeating Matt Kuchar 3 & 2 in the Final. Tiger Woods is the most successful player at the event, having won 3 times (2003, 2004, 2008) followed by Jason Day (2014, 2016) and Geoff Ogilvy (2006, 2009) each with 2 wins.
