Scotland is home to an array of dedicated rugby venues that host everything from the prestige of the Six Nations Championship to the fast-paced action of the United Rugby Championship (URC). This page provides a guide to some of the countryโs most prominent rugby grounds, categorised by city.
Edinburgh
Murrayfield Stadium
Located in the west end of the city, Murrayfield is the largest stadium in Scotland with a capacity of over 67,000. Since opening in 1925, it has been the headquarters of the Scottish Rugby Union and the home of the national team. It is world-renowned for hosting the Six Nations and the Autumn Nations Series, and holds the world record for a rugby union attendance (104,000 in 1975).
Edinburgh Rugby Stadium
Situated right next to the main bowl of Murrayfield, the Edinburgh Rugby Stadium is the purpose-built home of Edinburgh Rugby. Completed in 2021 with a capacity of 7,800, it features a state-of-the-art 3G pitch and four stands designed to create an intimate, high-energy atmosphere for professional club matches.
Raeburn Place
Located in the Stockbridge area, this historic ground is the birthplace of international rugby. It hosted the first-ever international rugby match between Scotland and England in 1871. Today, it remains the home of Edinburgh Academicals and continues to be a site of pilgrimage for rugby historians.
Glasgow
Scotstoun Stadium
Serving as the home of the Glasgow Warriors since 2012, Scotstoun is a multi-sport venue with a primary focus on professional rugby. It features a synthetic pitch and a capacity that expands to approximately 7,300 for Warriors’ matches. The ground is famous for the “Warrior Nation” atmosphere and has also hosted the Glasgow leg of the World Rugby Sevens Series.
Melrose
The Greenyards
While smaller than the professional stadia, The Greenyards is iconic as the “Home of Rugby Sevens.” It was here in 1883 that the game of seven-a-side rugby was invented by Ned Haig. Every April, the ground hosts the world-famous Melrose Sevens, attracting teams and fans from across the globe to the picturesque Scottish Borders.
Galashiels
Netherdale
Netherdale is the primary rugby venue for the central Borders and serves as the home ground for Gala RFC. It is notable for its architecturally significant grandstand, designed by Peter Womersley, which is a protected Category A listed building. The ground frequently hosts age-grade international fixtures and representative matches for the South of Scotland.
