Torrey Pines Golf Course (San Diego, CA)

Torrey Pines Golf Course is a 36-hole municipal public golf facility that opened in 1957 on the site of a former U.S. Army training centre. Named after the rare tree that only grows along this stretch of coast, the facility features two Par 72 courses – the North Course and the trickier South Course.

The South Course at 7,698 yards (7,039 metres) is the longest course regularly used on the PGA Tour, annually hosting the Farmers Insurance Open since 1968. The tournament uses both courses for the first two rounds and the South Course for the final two rounds. It is usually held in January or February and Tiger Woods is the most successful player, with 7 victories.

Tiger Woods was also successful in 2008 when the South Course hosted the U.S. Open, defeating Rocco Mediate in a 19-hole Monday playoff. The tournament returned for a second time in 2021 and was won by Jon Rahm of Spain, winning his first major after finishing one shot ahead of South African Louis Oosthuizen.
