The Royal St. George’s Golf Club was founded in 1887 by Dr William Laidlaw Purves, a Scottish surgeon who intended for the course to be a rival to St Andrew’s in the South of England.
The club is one of 10 courses on the Open Championship rotation, the only to be located in the South of England and when it hosted its first in 1894, became the first Open Championship to be played outside of Scotland. The course has gone on to host 14 Open Championships and is due to host its 15th in 2021. Winners of The Open at St. George’s include Darren Clarke (2011), Ben Curtis (2003) and Greg Norman (1993).
