Metalist Stadium (Kharkiv)

Metalist Stadium opened in 1926 and is currently the home of football club’s Metalist Kharkiv and Metalist 1925 Kharkiv. Upon its opening on the 12th September 1926, it was known as Traktor Stadium as it was sponsored by a nearby production plant and was built on the site of an old Holy Spirit cemetery. The first match was a 2-2 draw between Metalist and Dnipropretovsk.

It was renamed Zenit (Zenith) in 1940, Dzerzhynets (in honour of the Bolshevik secret police’s first director) in 1947 and then Avangard (Vanguard) between 1956 and 1976 before becoming Metalist Stadium. The stadium has undergone several renovations over the years, raising capacity from 10,000 in 1967 to 41,307 in the present day.

The most recent renovation took place in 2009 ahead of Ukraine co-hosting UEFA Euro 2012. Three group matches involving the Netherlands were played there, with the Dutch losing all three – 1-0 to Denmark, 2-1 to Germany and 2-1 to Portugal.

Metalist Kharkiv have maintained a constant presence in the stadium until its demise in 2016. A phoenix club, FC Metalist 1925 Kharkiv moved into the stadium and is now a co-tenant with Metalist Kharkiv following their revival in 2021. Shakhtar Donetsk played in the stadium from 2017 to 2020 due to the ongoing war in the Donbas region that forced them away from Donbass Arena.
